For sale is a 'sweetheart' badge showing the crest of the Royal Engineers regiment of the British Army. The King George VI royal cypher is also shown.
Sweethearts were unofficial and privately made badges for public sale. These would usually be purchased by members of the armed forces and presented to their ‘loved’ ones as a keepsake while away on active service. Sweetheart badges first became popular during WW1 and again during WW2.
DESCRIPTION:
Size: about 3/4" x 15/16" (19mm x 23mm).
Material(s): Brass metal with 2 vitreous enamels.
Finish: Tin wash (very thin plating).
Fitting: Pin.
Imprint: None.
Approximate age: c.1939 - 1945.
CONDITION:
A good condition metal and enamel badge. No damage, pin tight and in good working order. Tin wash is worn on high relief areas on the front side.
