Antique Georgian copper plate engraving engraving of Robert Marsham, 2nd Baron Romney (1712–1793). In 1790, he was a highly respected elder peer, prominent philanthropist, and a central pillar of London’s artistic and scientific societies.
Drawn from life by W. H. Brown and engraved by C Corbould, published according to an Act of Parliament in 1791.
The engraving where compiled for The Senator; or, Clarendon’s Parliamentary Chronicle, a set of engravings of members of parliament.
Paper measures 22 by 14 cm, plate mark area is 14 by 9 cm’s with the actual engraving 4 1/2 by 5 1/2 cm’s aprox.
The actual engraving is in very good condition for age, paper has age related marks, bumped edges, please see pictures.

Robert Marsham, 2nd Baron Romney (1712–1793) was an eminent British peer, dedicated philanthropist, and a foundational patron of the arts, sciences, and commerce during the Georgian era. Succeeding to the barony in 1724, Lord Romney chose a life of distinguished civic leadership over partisan politics. He is most historically celebrated as a founding father and the longest-serving President of the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (now the Royal Society of Arts), guiding the institution from 1761 until his death in 1793.

Under his stewardship, the society catalyzed the British Agricultural and Industrial Revolutions by funding pioneering technologies and artistic excellence. By 1790, Lord Romney was revered as an elder statesman of British philanthropy. He served for nearly four decades as President of the Marine Society, equipping underprivileged youths for naval careers, and commanded the West Kent Militia as Colonel. Famously painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds, Romney embodied the ideal of the enlightened, benevolent Georgian aristocrat. This antique print captures him at the twilight of his influential life, offering an authentic piece of eighteenth-century cultural and institutional history.
