Rational Association Friendly Society (Fattorini & Sons Ltd) - membership lapel badge (c.1930)

.
For sale is a finely made enamel badge issued by the RATIONAL ASSOCIATION FRIENDLY SOCIETY to its members. This Friendly Society was established in 1837 by Robert Owen (1771-1858). This design of badge was instigated in 1906.
Friendly Societies were Mutual organisations that helped people protect themselves against hardships such as unemployment, sickness and funeral costs through saving schemes and insurances. They were funded mainly by member’s subscriptions and run on a non-profit basis without the need to provide for shareholders. All gains were ploughed back into the Society and shared between their members. Friendly Societies grew in popularity during the 19th century along with the growth of new and industrial towns throughout Britain. But with the rise of Welfare State after WW2, Friendly Society numbers declined significantly but some still remain active today.
