Rare Antique world war 1 Friedrich cross medal
This is a rare antique original Friedrich Cross (Friedrich-Kreuz), a military decoration instituted by Duke Friedrich II of Anhalt from Germany in 1914.
It was awarded for merit during wartime, similar to the Iron Cross, to individuals who distinguished themselves on the battlefield or provided exceptional service on the home front during World War I.
On the obverse, this cross proudly displays Anhalt’s Prince Friedrich’s crowned royal cypher alongside the significant date, 1914. It is often likened to Anhalt’s equivalent of the 1914 Iron Cross, symbolizing the commitment and bravery of those who served during this pivotal period. On the reverse, the decoration carries the simple yet profound legend, “For Service in War,” encapsulating the sacrifices made by its recipients.
Given Anhalt’s status as a smaller state within the German Empire, this decoration was awarded in smaller numbers to its native sons, as well as to their German and Austrian allies. Its rarity and historical significance make it a prized acquisition for collectors and enthusiasts alike, serving as a poignant reminder of the contributions made by the principality’s soldiers during the Great War.
This medal is in good antique condition with some tarnishing from age.
