Rare antique Chambers Edinburgh journal 1841 Vol IX
This is a most fascinating look at life in England in the mid 1800's, nearly 200 yrs ago.
I am completely hooked! For example on page 145 the author tells us in the 'column for married people', never on any account chide or rebuke your wife in company, should she make any mistake in history, geography, grammar, or, indeed, or any other subject.. there are, I am persuaded, many wives of such deep feeling and high spirits, they must be treated with the utmost delicacy. Okay lads!!
Chambers's Edinburgh Journal was a weekly 16-page magazine started by Scottish brothers William and Robert Chambers in 1832 and priced at one penny. They became publishers and politicians and were influential in the mid-19th century, in both scientific and political circles.
Topics included Popular Literature, history, religion, language, and science and popular topics of the day written by well known authors. The serials in English literature were particularly popular and looked forward to each week. In time The Chambers’ Edinburgh Journal became the most popular periodical in Britain.
