Rare antique Chambers Edinburgh journal 1838 Vol VI
This is a most fascinating look at life in England in the mid 1800's, nearly 200 yrs ago.
I am completely hooked! For example on page 160 the author tells us how to kick a man with impunity............indeed, some politicians would be good to try that out on!
Chambers's Edinburgh Journal was a weekly 16-page magazine started by Scottish brothers William and Robert Chambers in 1832 and priced at one penny. They became publishers and politicians and were influential in the mid-19th century, in both scientific and political circles.
Topics included Popular Literature, history, religion, language, and science and popular topics of the day written by well known authors. The serials in English literature were particularly popular and looked forward to each week. In time The Chambers’ Edinburgh Journal became the most popular periodical in Britain.
Articles in this edition include: Diet of Napoleon, Why are our bodies warm? plain speaking, a visit to a workhouse, Queen's squabbles, How to kick a man with impunity, -much more! -
This leather-bound book is volume V1, 261 to 312. It is a compilation of the weekly journals and covers the period January 1837 - January 1838.
Will make a fantastic addition to any history enthusiast or antique book collector.
