Price drop Victorian Needlework Depicting The Return Of The Prodigal Son, C. 1860
Biblical stories were often the subject of art, needlework being no exception. This piece, showing the return of the repentant son to his loving father, dates back to around 1860.The son is shown with his shepherd's staff as the only job he could find after wasting his share of his father's estate was the lowly position of swine herder. He certainly looks contrite as his father welcomes hi back with open arms. The piece is done in traditional Berlin wool embroidery and is comprised in either counted cross stitch or very fine tent stitch that can be classified as pettipoint. The pettipoint is worked for the faces, hands and necks. Everything else is done in counted cross stitch
