For sale is a vintage PITMAN'S badge awarded on passing a proficiency test for Pitman's shorthand writing. The badge would originally have accompanied the recipient's certificate. This badge is almost a hundred years old and beautifully made.
Pitman's shorthand writing is based on a phonetics system whereby the symbols do not represent letters, but rather sounds. The four shorthand symbols from top left read in a clockwise direction read:

DESCRIPTION:
Size: about 1 1/16" x 1 1/4" (27mm x 32mm).
Material(s): brass metal with 3 vitreous enamels.
Finish: gilt.
Fitting: pin.
Imprint: J. R. GAUNT LONDON
Approximate age: about mid-1920's.
CONDITION:
Excellent condition. No damage. Pin in working order. Full gilt plating. Light surface scratch marks in red enamel at centre of cross, but noticeable only on close examination & when held at a certain angle to the light.
