A widespread "wives' tale" circulated that these portraits were cursed or magically fireproof! Because the prints were originally finished with a heavy, thick fire-retardant glossy sealer, firemen would occasionally discover them completely intact, face-down on the floor of burned-out houses after the hanging strings melted and dropped them safely.
