THE ARTIST

William G. Fitzsimons was a late-Victorian and Edwardian-era watercolourist, specialising in landscapes and architectural subjects.

His known body of work encompasses rural landscapes, woodland and cattle scenes, coastal and maritime subjects, harbour views and more complex architectural compositions.

Importantly, Fitzsimons was a documented exhibiting artist rather than simply an unidentified Victorian amateur. An original 1905 exhibition catalogue records W. G. Fitzsimons exhibiting Low Water – Port Erin, I.O.M. at the Thirty-Fifth Autumn Exhibition of Modern Art.

His paintings continue to appear on the international secondary art market. Recorded works include Peel Harbour, Isle of Man and Venice, while British auction records include a group of five signed Fitzsimons watercolours covering coastal, pastoral and architectural subjects.

This painting’s 1883 date demonstrates that Fitzsimons was already producing accomplished work more than two decades before the documented 1905 exhibition.

THE PAINTING

A beautiful and highly detailed original Victorian watercolour by William G. Fitzsimons, signed and dated by the artist 1883.

At approximately 143 years old, this is a genuine late-19th-century work depicting an evocative rural scene with a woman walking through the landscape, poultry/geese, substantial traditional farmhouse, country track, mature trees and another dwelling disappearing into the distance.

This is an especially attractive example of the Victorian fascination with the disappearing rural landscape.

Fitzsimons has constructed the composition in considerable depth: the female figure and birds animate the foreground, while the eye is carried along the country track towards the farmhouse and more distant buildings.

The vegetation is particularly accomplished, with layers of transparent watercolour creating the mature trees and dense foliage surrounding the buildings.

The restrained greens, browns and earth tones, combined with the softer atmospheric background, give the painting a wonderfully characteristic late-Victorian appearance.

Unlike many unsigned period landscapes encountered today, this example has the major advantage of being both signed and precisely dated by the artist.
