Old Irish print picture

Old Irish print picture Old Irish print picture Other Antiques & Collectables

The print is dedicated to one of the darkest chapters in Irish history — the Great Famine of the mid-19th century.
It depicts peasants gathered in prayer over their last remaining potatoes, unaware that the soil had already been stricken by Phytophthora infestans, the blight that would devastate harvest after harvest. For many families, this silent enemy meant that the struggle for survival was already lost.

The Angelus is an oil painting by French painter Jean-François Millet, completed between 1857 and 1859. The painting depicts two peasants in a field bowing over a basket of potatoes, while saying a prayer, the Angelus. The prayer and the ringing of the church bell mark the end of a day's work.
