Oil Painting by Jennifer Graham of Newtownards Railway Station 1900 painted in 1988
Original signed oil painting by Jennifer Graham, depicting Newtownards Railway Station, Co. Down, as it appeared circa 1900.
Painted in May 1988, the work is signed “Jennifer Graham” lower left and, unusually, retains the artist’s handwritten inscription on the reverse of the original canvas:
“Newtownards Railway Station 1900 – Jennifer Graham – May 1988.”
A particularly interesting piece of Northern Irish social and railway history, showing the station complex from an elevated viewpoint with the platforms, railway lines, station buildings, signal/control building and numerous small figures.
The station formed part of the historic railway network serving Newtownards, making the painting particularly appealing to collectors of Irish railway memorabilia, County Down history and Northern Irish topographical art.
Jennifer Graham is a recognised name on the Northern Irish secondary art market. Ross’s Auctioneers, Belfast maintain a dedicated artist record for Graham, and documented auction works include Mourne Ramblers, a signed oil on canvas, and Irish Cottages in Donegal, also a signed oil on canvas.
Further evidence of Graham’s regional subject matter has emerged: Bloomfield Auctions catalogued another Jennifer Graham oil, Mount Stewart Entrance — particularly relevant because Mount Stewart is also in the Newtownards/Ards area. That strengthens the attribution of Graham as an artist painting recognisable County Down and Northern Irish locations, rather than this being an isolated railway picture.
This example is especially attractive because the artist has identified the exact location, historical date represented and actual date of execution on the reverse.
