For sale is a very scarce enamel badge issued by the NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF HOUSEWORKERS (NIH) to their students who successfully graduated. This badge would have originally issued with the certificate/diploma and depicts the NIH logo. The design registration number 851974 (1947/1948) refers to the year this badge's design was registered with the Patents Office. This badge is also numbered 6724, being the certificate's number awarded to the graduate.

The NIH was established by Ernst Bevin in 1946 as a result of the Report on 'Post War Organisation of Private Domestic Employment' (June 1945). The aim of the NIH was to supervise the training and placing of women in approved private domestic employment, to award certificates (diplomas) of efficiency, raise standard of employed domestic work, to regulate minimum wages and working conditions for certified workers placed in approved employment. Residential training centres were in London and Swansea. The NIH was grant aided by the Ministry of Labour and National Service, though this grant was very much reduced in 1956. In 1962, it was renamed the National Institute of Housecraft Ltd and dissolved in 1972.
