.
The NSDN was a charitable and voluntary organisation set up in 1906 to improve upon and set higher standards for day care nurseries, as well as assisting in the setting up of child creches. They established their own day nurseries for pre-school aged children across England, Scotland and Wales as well as providing specialist two-year diploma qualifications for nursery nurses and childcare nannies. The NSDN also provided public information and instruction classes for mothers caring for babies and very young children.
In the early years of WW1 (1914-1918), the Board of Education had given their official recognition to over eighty NSDN nurseries. The Maternity & Child Welfare Act of 1918 allowed municipal authorities to set up and run child day nurseries but it was not till the 1930’s that they did so in any numbers. By 1938, there were 107 day nurseries (mainly NSDN) accommodating around 8,300 children with many more affiliated to the NSDN. The periods during both World Wars provided a stimulus and expansion in the NSDN as more mothers found employment outside the home, both in working and volunteering for the war effort. Financing of the NSDN and their nurseries was partially covered by charging 4d (4 pence) per day for the care of a child per day and this included meals, the remainder came from affiliation fees, gifts and voluntary donations. Today, the work of the NSDN is carried on by the National Day Nurseries Association.
