For sale is a blood donor badge issued by the National Blood Transfusion Board (NBTS) of England and Wales. This badge would have been awarded by the NBTS for a minimum of ten blood donations. The badge displays the NBTS logo of two entwined hearts surmounted by a crown. The badge is die-stamped into a domed shape and enamelled, a quality-made badge. A similar design of badge in hallmarked silver was also issued for a minimum of 25 blood donations.

This is a 'gents' badge as indicated by the buttonhole fittings and the 'lady's' badge would have a pin fitting.

The NBTS was established by the Ministry of Health in 1946 to coordinate regional blood donation services across England and Wales. In 2005 the national blood donor services (by now, known as National Blood Service) was amalgamated with the UK Transplant services to form the NHS Blood & Transplant (NHSBT). Also from 2005, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland would continue to run their own separate blood donor services.

Material(s): brass metal with 2 enamels.
Finish: gilt.
Fitting: buttonhole (horseshoe shaped clasp). These badges were also made with pin fittings.
Imprint: BLOOD DONOR Rd 855608 (1948/1949)
Approximate age: in use from c.1948 to early 1960's.
