For sale is a rare Past Captain's enamel badge issued by the MUSSLEBURGH CRUSADERS CLUB of East Lothian, Scotland. This horse riding club was established in 1937 and meets first Monday of each month at Brunton Hall in Musselburgh. Each year the club elects a Captain and since the club's foundation, there have been different 35 captains elected of which some were re-elected a few times. Presumably, quite a rare badge? The Crusaders Club are still active, they also raise funds for charity and partake in the Mussleburgh's 'Honest Lad and Honest Lass' annual festival during which the Crusaders' Chase is held. The Crusaders' Chase Night Dance is also held later in that same evening.

The man depicted on this badge is Thomas Duthie and who is reputed to have been the first crusader of Mussleburgh, hence the Crusaders name. On Thomas' return from his crusades in the Middle East and Palestine, he was honoured in 1533 with the award of a charter from King James V of Scotland. Thomas Duthie is also credited with the building of a shrine in the town devoted to Our Lady of Loretto.

Enthusiasm and fervour for Holy War crusades had passed their peak by the end of the 13th century and thereafter tended to be sporadic minor events with limited goals against Muslim held lands. With the rise of the Reformation, increasing cynicism against the practise of Church Indulgences, declining Papal powers and lack of general support had led to the demise of crusader activity. By the end of the 15th century the spirit of the Crusades has generally petered out.
