For sale is a small promotional advertising badge of the iconic figure of "Mr. Therm". This vintage badge is in an excellent and unworn state with no wear or rubbing to its gilt plating (please see 'Condition' section below).

Mr. Therm was created for the Gas, Light & Coke Company in 1931 by British freelance commercial artist Eric Fraser (1902-1983). Mr. Therm proved such an enduring and popular mascot with the gas industry and with the public too that his use survived nationalisation and continued to represent the gas industry until phased out during the early 1960’s.

Mr. Therm became one of best known characters of British advertising and was widely used by the Gas, Light & Coke Company (1812-1949) and again by the British Gas Council (1946-1972), who also heavily promoted Mr. Therm in their advertising. The use of Mr. Therm as an advertising icon received a boost at the Festival of Britain 1951 and also used to promote gas as a cleaner alternative to burning coal, more so after the 1956 Clean Air Act. In 1962 Mr. Therm was ‘retired’ when the British Gas Council hired advertising agency Colman, Prentis & Varley to launch a new series of campaigns under the slogan of “High Speed Gas”.
