For sale is a vintage enamel badge issued by British Railways (BR) in aid of their St. Christopher’s Railway Servants Orphanage Home in Derby.

St. Christopher's was opened in 1875 and cared for children of railway workers killed in the course of their employment. Derby was chosen because of its proximity to the large railway works there and served the north of England, while its sister orphanage at Woking in Surrey served the southern half of England. Boys and girls lived in separate wings of the main building and were admitted from the ages of 6 to 12 years of age, but had to leave when they were 15. It seemed that the children there were well looked after and educated in certain trades and domestic skills.

This badge depicts the BR owned M.V. TEAL which was built in 1936 and has been preserved, where it still operate excursion tours on Lake Windermere in the lake District. The Teal was built by Vickers Armstrong of Barrow-in-Furness, is about 136ft long, displaces 251 tons and is powered by diesel engines.
