For sale is a scarce badge issued in 1980 British Rail to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. This rail-line was was designed and built under the supervision of George Stephenson and was the first inter-city railway in the world to be built. The Liverpool & Manchester railway was double-tracked and opened in 1830 to passenger and freight traffic. The Rainhill Trials of 1829 had determined that the new line (and subsequent rail-lines) would operated entirely by steam locomotives. The badge shows the arms of Liverpool and Manchester co-joined by an 1830 1st Class rail coach and the British Rail emblem.
