JMC DSO (Methodist Church) - a vintage Junior Missionary Collector Distinguished Service Order award medal with 5 year bars (1950s)

For sale is an award JMC DSO (Junior Missionary Collector Distinguished Service Order) medal issued by the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society. This medal with its blue and orange ribbon was awarded to a member of the JMA (Junior Missionary Association) when £5 or more was collected for the church’s mission work abroad and at home. A bar with its year of issue was awarded and attached to the ribbon for £5 or more collected in subsequent years. Silver and gold year bars were also issued when a minimum of £20 and £100 was collected respectively. After ten bars had been collected, a special JMA Long Service Award badge in the form of a red Maltese cross was given and this was also attached to the ribbon.

This type of medal in the form of a Maltese cross was introduced in 1904 by Stanley Sowton of the Methodist Church and discontinued in 1992 when the award was superseded by a different form of medal with rainbow bars. This medal’s text reads JMC DSO FOR ZEAL FOR CHRIST, its reverse side is plain and uninscribed.
