▪︎ Iona in Argyll was established in 563 A.D. by Columba , who there founded a community which became one of the most famous in christendom. Essentially monastic in character and self-governing , the early Celtic Churches were generally located in lonely and inaccessible places , the remoteness of their situation reflecting the austere and anchoretic lives of their founders. On the last day of his life , St. Columba blessed the island saying - " Unto this place , small and mean tho' it be great homage shall yet be paid , not only by the King's and Peoples of the Scots , but by the rulers of barbarous and distant nations with their people. Thy saints also of other churches shall regard it with no mean reverence " A prophecy which has been remarkably fulfilled.
