HISTORICAL RARITY: 1970 Garda Richard Fallon (Original Funeral Card. First Garda Killed in The Troubles. Original)
Irish history collectors, ephemera archivists, and policing historians. This is an exceptional opportunity to acquire a 100% original, pristine 1970 "In Memoriam" funeral card for Garda Richard Fallon, an individual whose tragic sacrifice marked a profound turning point in modern Irish history.
Discovered untouched in a North Dublin attic, this card is not merely a piece of paper—it is a poignant, tangible connection to the very first day The Troubles spilled blood directly onto the streets of Dublin.
A Monumental Moment in Irish History:
On the morning of April 3rd, 1970, 43-year-old Garda Richard Fallon—a completely unarmed father of five living locally on Lorcan Road, Santry—responded to a midday armed bank raid at the Royal Bank of Ireland on Arran Quay. Showing incomprehensible bravery, Garda Fallon stepped forward to intercept the raiders. He was shot at point-blank range by a republican splinter group known as Saor Éire.
His murder sent shockwaves through Ireland. It resulted in a massive State Funeral, a national day of mourning, and led directly to Garda Fallon being posthumously awarded the Scott Gold Medal, the highest possible honor for bravery in An Garda Síochána.
Exquisite Visual Details & Artifact Facts:
• The Rare Photograph: Features the stark, original portrait of Garda Fallon in his full dress tunic and cap, framed in a traditional retro border.
• The Custom Poem: The bottom of the card bears a unique, highly moving tribute specifically composed for his sacrifice: "That thought and Duty's sudden leap / For Law—a people's lasting guide..."
• The Local Connection: Printed by the famous Lalor of 63 Middle Abbey Street, Dublin (clearly stamped on the reverse illustration of the Virgin Mary), grounding this piece entirely in the fabric of 1970s Dublin print history.
