For sale is a membership badge of the HAMPSHIRE WOMEN'S INSTITUTE.

The Women’s Institute (WI) was first established in 1897 at Ontario, Canada. Its first branch was established in Britain in 1915 to promote the war effort by helping to revitalise rural communities and encouraging more women to become involved in food production. The WI motto “For Home and Country” suited these aims and was readily adopted in 1915. Since then, the aims of the WI have broadened to encompass women’s needs that promote better opportunities for self-development, educational skills, participate in a wide variety of activities, networking and campaigning on issues that matters to them and their communities.

In England, the WI is organised on a county or regional basis and each represented a federation of WI clubs. The County Federations of WI clubs issues their own distinctive badges, such as the one pictured above (for Hampshire). There are separate WI organisations for Northern Ireland (The Federation of Women’s Institutes of Northern Ireland) and for Scotland (The Scottish Women’s Rural Institutes, SWRI).
