Antique Georgian copper plate engraving engraving of George Nugent-Temple-Grenville, 1st Marquess of Buckingham (1753–1813). By 1790, he was one of the wealthiest, most powerful, and famously arrogant aristocrats in the British Empire.

Paper measures 22 by 14 cm, plate mark area is 14 by 9 cm’s with the actual engraving 4 1/2 by 5 1/2 cm’s aprox.

George Nugent-Temple-Grenville, 1st Marquess of Buckingham (1753–1813) was an immensely powerful British statesman, a central political operator of the Georgian era, and one of the wealthiest peers in the empire.

Succeeding as Earl Temple in 1779, his historical legacy was cemented in 1783 when he acted as King George III’s personal emissary to collapse the Fox-North Coalition. Armed with a secret royal mandate, he successfully orchestrated the defeat of the coalition’s India Bill in the House of Lords, paving the way for his cousin, William Pitt the Younger, to become Prime Minister. In gratitude, the King elevated him to Marquess of Buckingham in 1784.

He served two significant terms as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. His second tenure, concluding just before 1790, was marred by extreme political turbulence during the Regency Crisis, where his staunch refusal to bend to the Irish Parliament’s demands caused a historic constitutional clash. Retiring from frontline politics after 1789, Buckingham dedicated his massive fortune to the aggrandizement of his legendary country seat, Stowe House. This antique print captures the Marquess at the height of his aristocratic supremacy, embodying the immense privilege and influence of the Georgian ruling class.
