Fossilized wood, Madagascar, Triassic period.
This fossilized wood found in Madagascar dates back to the Triassic period, which spans from 252 to 201 million years ago.The most common type of fossilized tree is from the Araucaria genus, a type of conifer also known as the Monkey Puzzle tree.
These fossils are often found in the Ambilobe region of northern Madagascar.
Petrified wood forms when wood is buried in sediments, and mineral-rich water gradually replaces the organic matter with minerals like silica, creating a stone replica of the original wood.
