Exquisite French Girandole Mirror Wall Sconce, 3-Candle, Gilt Bronze Cherubs, Baroque circa 1880

On offer is this fine and graceful antique girandole in the Louis XIV / Régence taste, with all the theatre of the Baroque in a single wall piece.

A cartouche-shaped backplate frames a bevelled oval mirror within a rich border of cast acanthus and rocaille scrollwork. Two winged putti recline at the crest amid foliate plumes, while two more stand sentinel at either side of the glass, draped in flowing ribbon swags. At the base, a classical female mask crowned with flowers and bound with a ribbon bow gives way to three scrolling candle arms, each ending in a beaded drip pan and a foliate-cast nozzle.

The casting is crisp and sculptural, with real depth in the faces, hands and drapery. The surface carries a warm, honest patina: golden gilt tones glow on the figures and frame, while the arms and sconces have deepened to a darker, softly verdigrised bronze. The old mirror plate has the gentle foxing and silvering spots of age, the kind of ghostly character that reproductions try to imitate.
