For sale is a vintage enamel badge issued by British Railways (BR) during the 1950's and 1960's to raise funds for their St. Christopher's Railway Servants Orphanage in Derby.

This badge is one of a series of BR owned steam locomotives and depicts the DUKE OF GLOUCESTER. The Duke of Gloucester was a BR Class 8 locomotive with a 4-6-2 wheel configuration. Built in 1954 and assigned with the number 71000, the Duke of Gloucester served on mainline rail services and was withdrawn in 1962 after only eight years of unsatisfactory service due to design faults that led to insufficient steam when needed. In 1974 this locomotive was rescued from Woodham's scrapyard at Barry in Wales and was fully restored after thirteen years.

This St. Christopher's orphanage was opened in 1875 to care for children of railway workers killed in the course of their employment. The orphanage could accommodate up to 300 children (boys and girls) aged from 6 to 15 years. From the early 1980’s, the orphanage stopped taking in children and later became a care-home for the elderly before it closed in 1993.

CONDITION:
Very good condition. No damage. Pin in working order. There is some wear to the tin plating.
