For sale is an enamel badge that would have been issued to a Civil Defence Instructor upon graduation along with his qualification certificate (the women’s Instructor’s badge would have had a pin fitting instead of the buttonhole stud). Instructors themselves would have been highly trained and become qualified at one of the three Civil Defence Technical Training Schools. Each course lasted around five days, were intensive and qualification standards were stringent requiring a minimum of 65% to pass in all tests. An Inspector could specialise in any of the Civil Defence Corps (CDC) functions and would have provided training locally to CDC recruits. In the early years of the CDC, the training syllabus would have followed must the same format as that of WW2 and as the potential effects of nuclear war became better understood, the syllabus was revised from 1954 to account for civilian protection in the event of a nuclear attack. In the absence of a uniform, an armband would also have been provided.

The Civil Defence Corps were established in 1949 and disbanded in 1968. They would initially been modelled on the Civil Defence Services of WW2 which was disbanded in 1945.
