For sale are four civil defence originally issued to volunteers of the CIVIL DEFENCE CORPS (CDC) and the INDUSTRIAL CIVIL DEFENCE SERVICE (ICDS).

The CDC were set up by the Home Office under the Civil Defence Act of 1948 in response to the developing Cold War with the USSR. They were a civil defence organisation similar in function to the Civil Defence of WW2 and volunteer members would be trained to assist in the rescue and general recovery after an attack. Their training also included what to do after a nuclear attack, widely seen as a real threat at the height of the Cold War but they also served many useful roles in coping with national disasters and emergencies. In March 1968, the CDC were stood-down and later disbanded along with other civil defence organisations such as the Auxiliary Fire Service, National Hospital Service Reserve and the Industrial Civil Defence Service (ICDS). Scotland and the Isle of Man issued similar badges but having a Scottish lion seated and a triskelion respectivevly, the Isle of Man badges being rare.

The ICDS was another Cold War era civil defence organisation established in 1953 and were a volunteer organisation trained to carry out civil defence duties at their places of work in the event of war. Although the ICDS' organisation was based on the Civil Defence Corps they were independent of them. Private and newly nationalised companies with 200 or more employees were permitted to organise their own ICDS units and train members. Although ICDS volunteers were not issued with a standard uniform they could be identified by use of their ICDS badge and the armband.

CDC and ICDS were members were all issued with uniforms and a cloth badge of similar design to the lapel badge were worn on the breast pocket and beret cap. These enamel badge were intended to be worn with civilian clothes. From 1948 until 1953, the badges carried the king's crown and thereafter until 1968 it was the queen's crown.

CONDITION:

* CDC (Fattorini) - blue enamel & gilt worn, commensurate with age and use.
* ICDS - good but with edge knocks to blue enamel (about the 9 o/c and 5 o/c positions).
* CDC (pin) - very good condition with wear to gilt plating, commensurate with age and use.
* CDC (queen's crown) - excellent condition.
