AUXILARY FIRE SERVICE (WW2 Home Front) - an AFS volunteer's lapel badge - unofficial issue (c.1940). RARE!
Postage is extra.
For sale is a rare lapel badge that would have been worn by a member of the AUXILARY FIRE SERVICE (AFS) when off-duty and in civilian clothes. These brightly coloured enamel badges were unofficial issues that members of the AFS could have purchased and worn when off-duty. Similar enamelled badges were also made with the lettering ARP (Air Raid Precaution services) but the AFS versions seem to be much rarer.
The AFS was established in January 1938 and was one of the Home-Front civil defence organisations formed in the run-up the Second World War (1939-1945). AFS members were all part-time volunteers trained by the regular fire services and whose role was to supplement their fire fighting capabilities. Individual AFS units were recruited and organised by local Fire Authorities across Britain, who would be responsible for AFS training and equipment, standards varied as did the working relationship between AFS units and the regular fire fighting service. As part of the reorganisation of Britain's numerous civil defence organisations, the AFS became the National Fire Service (NFS) in August 1941.
