Antique US Springfield Bayonet

This item is a U.S. Model 1917 / British Pattern 1913 transitional "over-stamped" sword bayonet, manufactured by Remington.
This piece tells a fascinating wartime production story. It was originally manufactured under contract for the British military during World War I. However, when the United States entered the war in April 1917, the U.S. military faced a massive shortage of Springfield M1903 rifles. To fill the gap, the U.S. government took over the ongoing British rifle and bayonet production contracts at the Remington factory. Instead of discarding the bayonets already stamped with British acceptance marks, the U.S. military simply struck out the British proofs and added U.S. ownership markings before issuing them to American troops.
