Early 20th Century George Hitchcock “Flower Girl in Holland” – Antique Framed Reproduction / After the 1887 Original

A beautiful and highly decorative early 20th-century reproduction of George Hitchcock’s celebrated masterpiece Flower Girl in Holland (1887), presented in what appears to be its original period black lacquer frame.

This is not a modern reproduction. Research indicates that Flower Girl in Holland was already being commercially reproduced by the early 20th century, with examples documented by the Library of Congress dating to around 1925.

The picture bears the original-style inscription:

“Geo. Hitchcock Op. XXXV 1887”

This matches the inscription recorded on the original painting held by the Art Institute of Chicago, where Flower Girl in Holland has been in the museum’s permanent collection since the late nineteenth century.

The artwork is housed in a substantial period black lacquer frame with glazed front and traditional backing, giving it an impressive display presence.

Research

Considerable research has been undertaken into this piece.

Based on George Hitchcock’s famous 1887 painting Flower Girl in Holland.

Bears the copied inscription “Geo. Hitchcock Op. XXXV 1887”, matching the documented inscription on the original.
Historical reproductions of this image were already being produced during the early twentieth century and are documented in institutional collections.

Similar reproductions continue to appear at auction and through specialist print dealers.

While I cannot guarantee whether this example is an early lithograph, photomechanical reproduction, or an early painted copy without removing it from its original frame, it appears to be an antique reproduction rather than a modern decorative print.

Condition

Good antique condition.
Attractive period black lacquer frame.
Age-related wear consistent with its age.
Ready to hang.

A wonderful piece for collectors of George Hitchcock, Dutch genre painting, antique decorative art, or early twentieth-century framed reproductions.

Collection preferred due to the size and glass, although postage may be possible at the buyer’s expense and risk.
