Antique Asparagus serving plate

Antique Asparagus serving plate Antique Asparagus serving plate Other Antiques & Collectables

This beautiful, complete Late
Victorian or Edwardian silver-
plated asparagus serving set
produced by Boardman, Glossop &
Co. in Sheffield, England, dating to
roughly c. 1885-1910

The Victorians and Edwardians were
famous for creating highly
specialized, complex tableware for
specific foods, and asparagus was
treated as a luxury delicacy. This
particular setup is a complete and
valuable collector's ensemble
because it retains all of its original
pieces:
The Base Tray: A rectangular
serving platter featuring an
elegant scalloped border with
ornate acanthus leaf and shell decoration.
• The Removable Cradle/Rack: A
pierced, openwork wire-frame
insert featuring a classic fish-scale
or arched pattern. This grid
allowed freshly cooked asparagus
stalks to drain away excess water
so they wouldn't get soggy on the
tray.

2 sauce Boats:
Positioned at either end of the
cradle, these miniature pouring
pitchers were designed to serve
melted butter or Hollandaise
sauce alongside the spears.

• The Serving Tongs: Placed across
the middle, the broad, flat-bladed
mechanical tongs allowed the host
or servants to securely lift multiple
delicate spears at once without
crushing them.
This is a rare collectable piece.
In very good condition but needs cleaning.
