Antique Arma Christi crucifix

Striking hand carved Arma Christi wooden Crucifix with bisque porcelain figure of Jesus. The cross is inscribed INRI on top and is beautifully carved.

This is an excellent example of a Black Forest Arma Christi Crucifix - made from two separate pieces of hand carved wood, the cross in inserted into the base. The base is in the shape of carved rocks to represent the mount where the Crucifix was erected.

Arma Christi (Latin: The Weapons of Christ) is a cross or crucifix adorned with the tools by which Christ suffered and died for us. The expression can be interpreted as “those weapons used against Christ during His Passion” or, as I prefer it, “Those weapons with which Christ destroyed evil and even Death itself.”

This is a lovely piece.
