Vintage 70's Handmade Santons Terracotta "Old Lady" Doll/Figurine
Very Rare French Vintage Terracotta Figurine from the Provencal Region of Santon France. Made by J.P. Marinacci.
Also available for sale is figurine of old gentleman by same craftsman in separate advert. Both figures together combine well.
Hands, Face and Feet are Handmade and Arms also Move.
(Reflected in asking price).
All material clothing comes from same region and shows some age related on wear on apron and hat but otherwise in extremely good condition.
Measures 20cms /8" High.
Santons (meaning ‘little saints’) are small figurines made of local Provençal clay from Marseille and Aubagne. When these figures were first made in the 18th century, the clay wasn’t fired and they weren’t called santons until 1826, as records show, but a tradition that started with just three market stall sellers in Marseille now includes hundreds of traditional craftsmen who make santons for many Provençal homes.
These dolls/figurines were often sold around Christmastime and displayed in the Church Crib.
