French santons doll

A Beautiful vintage French Santons doll from the Aubagne region of Provence in France. These traditional dolls are hand-made by various famous passionate crafts folk. Signed G. Devouassoux on the base.

This hand-sculptured figurine portrays an old woman in traditional clothing. She is carrying a bag full of herbs. The doll's head, hands and feet have been hand made from terracotta clay from the region and her clothes are made from Provencal fabric.

These simple figurines represent Christian traditions in the land of Provence and are often put into the nativity crib in churches at Christmas as representatives of the various local people and their trades and work.

Highly collectable and In very good vintage condition.
