French figurine in the Art Nouveau style
This is an antique French figurine from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, titled "Première Leçon" (First Lesson). The original design for this sculpture is by French artist Albert Barthélemy.
It depicts a young woman in a period dress, lifting the hem of her skirt, and on the base, small decorative bird figurines (likely swans or geese) are visible on the sides.
Such decorative figurines from the period were most often made of a tin alloy (known as zamak, French: régule, English: spelter) or bronze, and then gilded, patinated, or painted. The base beneath the sculpture itself was made of a precious stone (likely onyx or marble).
The figurine shows signs of wear, and the gilding has naturally worn away in many places (the patina of time).
