Iconic piece of Irish numismatic history: the Series A £10 "Lady Lavery" banknote. First introduced in 1928 as the inaugural legal tender of the Irish Free State, this series remained in circulation until 1977 and is widely considered one of the most beautiful banknote designs in modern history.


​Design Details:

Front (Obverse): Features the classic portrait of Lady Hazel Lavery, wife of the renowned artist Sir John Lavery. The portrait depicts her as Kathleen ni Houlihan, the mythical heroine of Ireland, set against a backdrop of the Lakes of Killarney.

Back (Reverse): Features the allegorical figure of the River Bann, modeled after the stone river masks found on the façade of the Custom House in Dublin.

These notes were printed by Waterlow & Sons in London and serve as a tangible link to the formation of the Irish state.
