Underground in Japan by Rey Ventura
Wtitten by Rey Ventura, a Filipino writer based in Yokohama, Japan. Buruma merely provides the afterword. There is also an introduction by James Fenton. These big names showcase a sharp piece of reportage by Ventura, who in 1989 spent a year working as an illegal migrant worker out of the skid row district of Yokohama, Kotobukicho. This is an insider's look at the clannish camaraderie of Filipino workers and the complex relations between them and their Japanese employers and fellow workers. It is written in simple, to-the-point prose in a sequence of incidents, vignettes and reflections. Great reportage, and a classic street ethnography that is quoted by just about everyone interested in migrant communities in Japan.
