The History of the Great Sailing Ships of the Modern Era

Tomaso Gropallo was born in Pontremoli in 1898 into a noble Genoese family. A Genoese patrician, he was a lawyer and maritime expert, a member of the foreign associations Nautical Research of Greenwich (GB), the Association Caporniers de Saint Malo, and a member of the Merchant Marine Academy.

In 1917 he volunteered for the artillery and left for the Carso front , where he wrote his war diary, I Cannoni di Caporetto . At the end of the war he returned to Genoa and graduated in law with a thesis on transoceanic commercial relations.

In 1929 he published Il romanzo della vela. During the Second World War he was called up for military service and after 8 September he joined the British army as an auxiliary. After the war he resumed his collaboration with prestigious nautical magazines and published an updated edition of Il Romanzo della vela with Mursia. He died in Genoa in 1977. Google Books.
