5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and easy history of "the Troubles"

This was a comprehensive, yet very easy to read, history of Ireland and "The Troubles". I'm Irish American but had never really understood the complete origin of the conflict. I loved this book. It explained so much to me and in such an easy to digest format. I thought it was excellent.

The book might be out of print -- it dates from 1980, after all. But if you want an easily-readable primer on the history of Ireland (not just Northern Ireland) and why the country has been so conflicted for so long, this would be an excellent choice. I used to work with an Irishman and now, having read this book, I understand his embarrassment at having been actually born in London, as well as his reluctance to swear allegiance to the Queen when he became a Canadian citizen. To North Americans, these issues might seem completely inconsequential, but they have historical import for someone from the country. Having read this book made me more sensitive to them.
