With fold-out map. Frontispiece portrait of Mary Queen of Scots. Palace and St. Michael's Kirk stand elevated on a promontory of the southern shore of Linlithgow Loch. Map of Palace and engraving circa 1678 shows Prospectus Palatis Limnuchensis. Cromwell spent part of the winter of 1650-51 in the Palace. Booklet describes May 29th 1662 party to celebrate birthday of Charles II with Earl of Linlithgow and Magistrates. A table of confections was set up in the marketplace and the fountain ran with French and Spanish wine for three or four hours. All drank the healths of King and Queen and many more. Several basketfuls of glasses were broken. At this celebration the famed covenant (pledging Scotland to be Protestant, 1638) was burned. Later, with another political party in power, this burning was denied. Booklet includes fold-out map of Palace. [Google Books]
