This volume provides a comprehensive overview of the first public museum in Europe devoted exclusively to contemporary art - the popular "Neue Pinakothek" museum in Germany.

The Neue Pinakothek, opened in 1853, was the first public museum devoted to contemporary art. Its new building was opened in 1981 and the collection contains some 5000 paintings and sculptures from the late 18th century to the early 20th century. In addition to the expected French and European Romantic, Barbizon and Impressionist artists the collection contains major works of art by German, Austrian and Swiss artists.

This beautifully produced guide book contains over 200 coloured reproductions, each accompanied by a brief comment about the work. An introduction to the museum, by Christian Lenz, the Director, covers its history and that of its collection. The works are presented chronologically with a short introductory essay preceding each of the 20 sections. There is a brief German bibliography and index.

Art from the German-speaking world includes Romantic art from the late 18th-early 19th century; paintings created in Rome over the same timescale; The Nazarenes; Biedermeyer art; paintings from the 19th century, including the Schafer Collection (Friedrich, von Menzel, Leibl and Schuch); history painting (including von Kaulbach, von Piloty and von Lenbach); von Marees, Bocklin. Feuerbach and Thoma; social realists (Liebermann, Slevogt and von Uhde, and Dutch painters from the Hague School); German Impressionists (including Corinth) and Symbolist and Art Nouveau painters (including Hodler, Khnopff, Klimt and Schiele).

This collection allows German art from the 19th century to be placed within the more familiar sweep of French and English art of the period.
