The Irish Farmer's Calendar, Containing the Business Necessary to be Performed in Husbandry and Rural Economy, During Every Month in the Year.
Duodecimo (12mo), 11 x 19 cm.
Pagination: 384 pp. (main text), followed by 6 numbered index pages. Totaling 390 pp. Collated complete.
Dating Note: Title page is undated, as issued; Preface is dated and signed in print by the author: "Dublin, April, 1835."
Bound in a later 19th-century utilitarian cloth reference binding. Dark green/brown diamond-textured cloth spine with gilt lettering and decorative flourishes. Coordinating blue-grey textured cloth sides over stiff boards. Text block edges are stained red. Binding shows surface rubbing and minor handling wear, but remains square.
Provenance & Markings: The top right corner of the title page features a historic ink ownership signature that has been heavily crossed out/defaced with black ink blocks. Opposite the title page, the blank flyleaf shows heavy, dark ink offsetting/ghosting. Front orange endpaper features an early pencil mark (a circled "57"). No library stamps.
Structure: Good. The external cloth is intact. The original orange-coated endpapers are completely closed and unbroken at the joints. The text block is generally firm, two pages are loose at top side, and showing an inner split in the gutters, not interfering with the orange end papers or cover.
A highly scarce, comprehensive 19th-century monthly guide to Irish agriculture. Contains practical instructions tailored specifically to the Irish climate, covering livestock management (cattle, sheep), crop cycles (barley, wheat, beans, pease), spade culture vs. ploughing, peat and bog management, thrashing operations, and general rural economy.
