Rose Dugdale grew up in Chelsea and on a Devon estate, being presented to the Queen at Buckingham Palace, as a debutante, in 1958. She trained at Oxford as an academic economist but at 30 began giving away her inheritance to the poor. In 1972 she travelled to Ireland to join the IRA, becoming involved in the helicopter bombing raid of Strabane Barracks and the armed theft of 19 old master paintings. She gave birth to a son in prison and on release was involved with an IRA linked vigilante movement against drugg dealers in Dublin.
