The Dublin And Monaghan Bombings (And The Murder Triangle) by Joe Tiernan - Paperback
Product Information
At 5.30pm on 17th May 1974 three no-warning bombs exploded in Dublin city centre killing 26 people and injuring almost 300. Eighty minutes later a fourth no-warning bomb exploded in the town of Monaghan, killing six people and injuring 15. In this book, Joe Tiernan gives a startling insight into the execution and planting of the bombs and the mass killing of innocent civilians. He also looks at an area of Northern Ireland that became known as the Murder Triangle in the 1970s. For a period of over five years loyalist killer squads, including many of those involved in the Dublin and Monaghan bombings, operated virtually impeded in this deadly triangle.
A Review
This book is divided into several parts. It begins with a clearly-presented description of the events of Friday May 17th, 1974 when three no-warning car bombs exploded in Dublin, followed by a fourth in Monaghan.
Unlike the North of Ireland which was in a perpetual state of high-security, Dublin City and Monaghan Town in the Republic were normal, peaceful and bustling with shoppers on that Friday. It was all the more terrifying therefore when 33 people were killed and more than 300 injured in a cold, calculated and efficient terrorist operation against a completely undefended populace.
Joe Tiernan has spent years researching the background to these events and presents the information clearly, giving dates, times and the names and photographs of the guilty. Giving information on the background of those who committed these crimes expands the basic scope of the book beyond the immediate events of May 17th and leads on to the other sections of the book including an explanation of the Murder Triangle of Armagh & Tyrone.
