Oscar Lewis was born in San Francisco and brought up in the nearby city of Sebastopol. He attended UC Berkeley for a year before quitting in 1912 to write. He spent his life studying the history of California and the City by the Bay in particular. In the late 1920's and 30's, Mr. Lewis emerged as a historian when Californians in particular and Americans in general were beginning to examine their past and celebrate their heritage. This concise history of San Francisco covers the initial discover of the Bay by Spanish explorers, the founding of the mission, the early days in Yerba Buena, the Gold Rush, and the 100 years that followed. {Google Books}
