This is one of a trilogy on Pepys and draws much on the famous diary as well as upon Admiralty and other records. It is very interesting for those who love things naval and historical, especially in the seventeenth century. It reveals Pepys as the person who reformed the civil service and it reveals the relationship between himself and Charles II. After reading the first book in the trilogy, I bought the other two from Amazon and I am very glad I did. I have yet to read number 3 but number two was wonderful, and number one was a total eye-opener. I would heartily recommend this. The book was thrilling because it gave an account not only of the Great Fire, but of the Dutch incursions on the east coast, and up the Thames, as well as the battle for Tangiers.

Sir Arthur Wynne Morgan Bryant was an English historian, columnist for The Illustrated London News and man of affairs. His books included studies of Samuel Pepys, accounts of English eighteenth- and nineteenth-century history, and a life of George V.

Bryant's historiography was often based on an English romantic exceptionalism drawn from his nostalgia for an idealised agrarian past. He hated modern commercial and financial capitalism, he emphasised duty over rights, and he equated democracy with the consent of "fools" and "knaves"
