Part autobiography and part history, written upon the author's return from Rome in the early Spring of 1939 where he had gone to write of the funeral of Pope Pius XI and the selection of his successor. His object is the show that immediate history, however disturbing and horrible, does not affect at all the life of the spirit.
Walpole, on vacation falls in love with the scenery of Rome and finds a secluded fountain by chance. He returns hoping to rediscover the fountain along with the optimism of his youth.—Katlego
