Penguin Box of Quotations: Penguin Dictionary of Quotations and Penguin Dictionary of Modern Quotations by J. M. and M. J. Cohen
The Penguin Dictionary of Quotations.
This dictionary is designed for the casual reader. It sets out to give him the common stock of quotations from Shakespeare, the Bible and Paradise Lost, side by side with remarks and stray lines by almost unknown writers who have enriched the language with only a single phrase.
Foreign languages are quoted in the original where the quotation is generally remembered in its foreign form, but an English translation is always provided. Modern authors have been drawn on for what the compilers believe to be their memorable sayings, and the ancients have been pruned of many lines that have gone into previous dictionaries of quotations, but which are now almost certainly forgotten. The reader, the writer, the after-dinner speaker, the crossword-puzzle solver and the browser - all will find what they want among the 12,000 or so quotations of this dictionary.
The Penguin Dictionary of Modern Quotations
'A bayonet is a weapon with a worker at each end' - British pacifist slogan, I940
"Cursed are the peacemakers' - The Representative by Rolf Hochhuth
The Penguin Dictionary of Modern Quotations is a selection of what has been written or said between the beginning of this century and the present day. It includes both the wit of the dinner table and the comedy of the Goon Show. Equally it is a collection of the declarations of statesmen, men of letters, obscure officials and notorious scoundrels.
J. M. and M. J. Cohen have compiled this volume as a companion to The Penguin Dictionary of Quotations. Their new book is drawn from mainly English sources but provides the same comprehensive scope within the narrower compass of more recent times. Google Books.
